Chebsko and Loketsko Regions

From crowns to chains

The two regions are similar in many ways but also distinctly different. Chebsko Region was significantly influenced by the culture of neighbouring German areas, such as Thuringia and Vogtland. The traditional costumes of the former Loket Region, which included the broader area around Karlovy Vary, resembled more closely the costumes worn in the rest of Bohemia.

In Chebsko Region, traditional costumes were worn until around the mid-19th century. However, the locals had a deep connection to their customs and music, so the folk culture continued to be celebrated. Spa towns would invite Cheb peasants to showcase their costumes and traditions.

The costumes of Karlovy Vary were certainly not inferior to those of Cheb. However, they were much more similar to those worn in the rest of the Czech lands - a typical silhouette and a large number of skirts. Women often bought expensive fabrics and wore silk, brocade or satin. The more luxurious the fabric, the more women and girls showed it off.

Folk dress was rich; men wore silver necklaces and pendants, which were found in other regions but not nearly as commonly. Women wore elaborate silver necklaces made from coins, various metal elements, coloured stones and crosses.
