Meine Liebe!
Once the largest German-language island in our country, the region with a rich folk culture influenced by Germanic traditions is Hřebečsko, known in German as Schönhengstgau. It is an extensive area on the border of eastern Bohemia and central Moravia.
The local costume has changed slightly over time, according to surviving images, photographs, verbal descriptions and parts of the garment itself. However, it has always been characterised by dark colours. The cut of the women's costume is based on the Renaissance dress. For example, the shape of the neckline of the bodice was taken from them. The original form of the costume disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century, while new, renewed costumes were created in the inter-war period. Their creators built on the old designs, but the new costumes showed certain deviations from the original ones, whether it was the material used or the cut.
The decline of the costumes in Hřebečsko is linked to the forced expulsion of the German population from the region after World War II. However, there are still patriots who keep the legacy of their ancestors alive.
