The Heart of Activity in the Lower Chodsko Region? Mrákov, one of the eleven privileged villages whose inhabitants guarded the regional borders and trade routes leading to Domažlice. Although the people of the Upper and Lower Chodsko Region had much in common, you will encounter differences reflected in their traditional clothing.
In the vicinity of Mrákov, more church holidays were celebrated, while the Upper Chods were mainly connected to secular festivities, such as Carnival. This was also significant for the Lower Chodsko Region residents, though in a slightly different context. During this time, weddings were often held in the Lower Chodsko Region because there was less work in the fields, allowing people more time for celebrations.
Mrákov and its surroundings were also favoured by Božena Němcová, who stayed there in 1847.She wrote about the local folk costumes, notably mentioning the scarves that were starting to be worn around the neck at that time. Older people were upset, considering covering the neck with a scarf was shameful. However, the influence of fashion was more substantial, and scarves became a symbol of luxury.
