A peculiar part of the Pošumaví Region
Prácheň Region, located in the northern part of the South Bohemian Region and bordering the Plzeňsko Region. It encompasses several micro-regions: Strakonicko, Vodňansko, Protivínsko, and Volyňsko.
Prácheň Region played an important role in our history, as it was once one of the regions of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The area gets its name from the former Prácheň Castle near Horažďovice. Today, you will find its ruins and may still recognise the remnants of its bastions, walls, and towers. Legends claim that a treasure was buried somewhere beneath the castle walls.
Prácheň Region experienced harsh winters. The locals adapted their clothing to these conditions. Women wore scarves, often tied under the chin and covering the mouth. This provided at least partial protection from the cold and wind, but also from the rapidly changing temperatures as they moved from the chamber to the stables. Gradually, however, local women began to wear scarves tied in this way even in summer.
Like in other parts of the Šumava, there was a significant German influence here. Evidence of this is the German equivalent of the mentioned unique scarf: “Mäulentejchal”. A local peculiarity became the “kaftan”, a skirt sewn together with a bodice.
